An Elegant Country Romance...

Katie Watson & Mark Woelner • 4th April 2009

Katie and Mark met quite by chance. At the time, Katie’s older sister was dating Mark’s younger brother, and one Saturday night she invited Katie to join them and their friends for a night out. They all met at Katie’s sister’s boyfriend’s house (which was also Mark’s house) and were about to head off when Mark returned home from a fishing trip.

Taking one look at Katie, he immediately decided to join the group. Katie played hard to get but Mark was determined to get the catch of his life.

Six years later, Mark proposed during a trip to the Hunter Valley to celebrate Katie’s birthday. Of course, she said yes.

“The moment he reached into his pocket and presented me with the most breathtaking diamond ring and asked me to marry him, I burst into tears.”

The couple chose Terrara House Estate for their elegant country romance wedding theme. Katie’s gorgeous gown featured hand sewn Chantilly lace with a rose at the waistline to match her rose headpiece.

The couple’s day was perfect from the first moment. They married under the giant fig trees in the estate grounds, a romantic setting for a very emotional ceremony. A relaxed photoshoot was followed by canapés with their guests in the Rose Garden, before a formal reception in the chandelier-lit marquee. The table decorations featured greenery and herbs from the estate’s gardens with crystals and flowers as centre-pieces.

“Our wedding day captured the beauty of dimly lit lights and crystals, the elegance of lace and silk, and the romance and tranquillity of the country.”

Katie and Mark chose a traditional three-tiered cake with two layers of fruitcake and one of chocolate mud. With beautiful dusty pink roses spilling down one side, the cake was simple, yet very elegant.
For their bomboniere, the couple opted for cute little country-style jars of strawberry jam.

Following an unforgettable day, Katie and Mark departed for a fabulously romantic Cook Island honeymoon.

Profile: Dr Trish Vezgoff, Civil Celebrant

As part of a new feature on The Bride's Diary Blog, we will be introducing you to individuals who work in the wedding industry... giving you an insight into who they are and why they love weddings!

This week we have been talking to Dr Trish Vezgoff, a Civil Celebrant who has been officiating at weddings for the past 17 years. Trish spoke to us about her love of providing unique wedding services  tailored to the bridal couples' personality, as well as the wide range of exciting and emotional experiences she has had as a celebrant...

Tell us a little about your business…

I am a Civil Celebrant, having applied almost 25 years ago after having been to several civil weddings that I felt all lacked a great deal in both content and delivery. I then waited eight years for a response from Canberra before my appointment early in 1994.

•What is your role in the business and why are you passionate about it

I am a sole trader, and still delight in being able to help couples achieve the ceremony of their dreams. I am also called upon frequently to write and officiate at other ceremonies such as baby namings, renewal of vows or even funeral ceremonies for families I have worked with before or who have referred me to friends.

• How long have you been working in the industry?

I am entering my seventeenth year as a Celebrant.

• What are some of your past business experiences?
The experience of being a Celebrant has taken me to many venues I may otherwise not have visited. Also, because I work so closely with clients to help them achieve their ideal ceremony, I have participated in formal and informal ceremonies, in themed ceremonies, on beaches, mountain tops, parks, and indoor settings including on boats on Sydney Harbour, reception centres and Canberra's National Library. Wet or windy weather cam often pose challenges as can shade free sites in hot weather. A couple of times ceremonies have had to stop in the middle because a member of the bridal party or a guest has fainted; once the best man had to scramble over a cliff face because a high wind had blown the table holding the documents and a large paperweight over the edge. Red carpets can also be hazardous on rough ground or in high winds. Too many more experiences to mention!

• What is one of your favourite recollections from your business?

A couple of moving experiences come to mind: the marriage of an eighty two year old man to his seventy-eight year old bride.
A renewal of vows ceremony on a couple's sixtieth wedding anniversary at which five generations of the family were present.
Another renewal of vows for a couple who had been married at a Registry Office overseas forty years before and who had both suffered serious illnesses in the interim. The 'bride' fulfilled her lifetime wish of having a proper white wedding with flowers and all the trimmings, and with their grown up children acting as their bridal party.
Little children at a wedding, specially in a bridal party, can always be relied upon to provide unintended merriment and/or embarrassment.

• Tell us a bit about your family and home life…

I work from a home office, and my family have become used to having to consult my desk diary before planning most family get togethers. My children are now grown with their own families so I have a rich and full life juggling work and play.

• How do you enjoy spending your spare time?

In what spare time I have - not much - I love listening to music, going to the theatre, reading, travelling and socialising with friends over a good meal and nice wines.

• What is your most memorable life experience?

Too many to enumerate, but my own marriage, children, travelling around the world and also attaining my PhD as a mature age student would have to be high on the list.

• What are your plans for the future?

Whilst ever I am fit and still blessed with curiosity, I hope to continue as I do at present.

Profile: Fiona from Abode Flowers

As part of a new feature on The Bride's Diary Blog, we will be introducing you to individuals who work in the wedding industry... giving you an insight into who they are and why they love weddings!

This week we have been chatting with the vivacious and bubbly Fiona from Abode Flowers about her love of flowers, the laughs and love she shares with her young family, and the wedding experiences that make her love her business...

• Tell us a little about your business…

My buisness is abode flowers, I start it from home about 3 & a half years ago, I open a studio shop in Port Kembla about 2 years ago and I love it. I only do flowers for Weddings, funtions and special occasions.

• What is your role in the business and why are you passionate about it?

I run the business - so I meet with Brides & Groom to quote for their flowers, I go to the flower markets to select all of the flowers, I do the flowers bouquets and arrangements and I deliver them to the Bride & Groom on the day & set up all the flowers for the ceremony and recption. So it's a very personal buisness. I am very passionate about my job and just love creating flowers for people's special day. Flowers can create a theme and beaty for a wedding that is just so fun and beatiful.

• How long have you been working in the industry?

I have worked in the flower industry for about 12 years.

• What are some of your past business experiences? • What is one of your favourite recollections from your business?

I have so many weddings that have been just amazing to be a part of. But 1 that stands out for me is a Wedding I did for a great couple Johanna & Greg, it was at Raven thorpe and Johanna wanted a very garden Wedding with the look of just going into the garden and picking some flowers and putting them in your grandma's old vases. So I start collecting old cut glass vases in all different sizes from op shops, garages sales and where ever I could find them. I loved it when it was all together and with the garden posy bouquets for the bride and the brides maids if just looked grat. And it just so much fun to do.

One more that was great was Rebecca and Jamie's Wedding, A garden party, with small bird cages wrapped with jasmin & fairy lights and hung in the trees, A large Bird cage again wrapped with jasmin & fariy lights for the wishing well.
Hurricane vases with rocks & candles in them with vine and bright pink and yellow mini roses through the vine. Every thing was just so cute and fun.

There are so many good experience and so many great couples that are just so happy to be getting married.

• Tell us a bit about your family and home life…

I am married to an amazing man and we have 2 boys that are always a handful but are great kids that bring this energy and love into our lives that I can't imagine life with out.

The boys are the reason why I started doing my buisness, Doing Weddings allows me to be at home during the week for the boys and when I need to be away on the Wedding Days my husband is able to be here for them.

Abode Flowers gives me the best of both of my worlds my love for my family and my love for flowers.

• How do you enjoy spending your spare time?

We love the beach and spend alot of time there in the surf or walking the dog. I garden and listen to music. Angus & Julia Stone & Florence & the machine are the favs at the moment.

• What is your most memorable life experience?

So many,But I would have to say the first time I kissed my husband way back when I was 17, when our kids were born & when we got married.

• What are your plans for the future?

With Abode flowers the plan is to grow the business so one day it will be  full time and I can be doing flowers all the time.
Personaly we are planning on renovating our house soon, and just helping our kids grow up and have lots of fun doing it.
