Profile: Fiona from Abode Flowers

As part of a new feature on The Bride's Diary Blog, we will be introducing you to individuals who work in the wedding industry... giving you an insight into who they are and why they love weddings!

This week we have been chatting with the vivacious and bubbly Fiona from Abode Flowers about her love of flowers, the laughs and love she shares with her young family, and the wedding experiences that make her love her business...

• Tell us a little about your business…

My buisness is abode flowers, I start it from home about 3 & a half years ago, I open a studio shop in Port Kembla about 2 years ago and I love it. I only do flowers for Weddings, funtions and special occasions.

• What is your role in the business and why are you passionate about it?

I run the business - so I meet with Brides & Groom to quote for their flowers, I go to the flower markets to select all of the flowers, I do the flowers bouquets and arrangements and I deliver them to the Bride & Groom on the day & set up all the flowers for the ceremony and recption. So it's a very personal buisness. I am very passionate about my job and just love creating flowers for people's special day. Flowers can create a theme and beaty for a wedding that is just so fun and beatiful.

• How long have you been working in the industry?

I have worked in the flower industry for about 12 years.

• What are some of your past business experiences? • What is one of your favourite recollections from your business?

I have so many weddings that have been just amazing to be a part of. But 1 that stands out for me is a Wedding I did for a great couple Johanna & Greg, it was at Raven thorpe and Johanna wanted a very garden Wedding with the look of just going into the garden and picking some flowers and putting them in your grandma's old vases. So I start collecting old cut glass vases in all different sizes from op shops, garages sales and where ever I could find them. I loved it when it was all together and with the garden posy bouquets for the bride and the brides maids if just looked grat. And it just so much fun to do.

One more that was great was Rebecca and Jamie's Wedding, A garden party, with small bird cages wrapped with jasmin & fairy lights and hung in the trees, A large Bird cage again wrapped with jasmin & fariy lights for the wishing well.
Hurricane vases with rocks & candles in them with vine and bright pink and yellow mini roses through the vine. Every thing was just so cute and fun.

There are so many good experience and so many great couples that are just so happy to be getting married.

• Tell us a bit about your family and home life…

I am married to an amazing man and we have 2 boys that are always a handful but are great kids that bring this energy and love into our lives that I can't imagine life with out.

The boys are the reason why I started doing my buisness, Doing Weddings allows me to be at home during the week for the boys and when I need to be away on the Wedding Days my husband is able to be here for them.

Abode Flowers gives me the best of both of my worlds my love for my family and my love for flowers.

• How do you enjoy spending your spare time?

We love the beach and spend alot of time there in the surf or walking the dog. I garden and listen to music. Angus & Julia Stone & Florence & the machine are the favs at the moment.

• What is your most memorable life experience?

So many,But I would have to say the first time I kissed my husband way back when I was 17, when our kids were born & when we got married.

• What are your plans for the future?

With Abode flowers the plan is to grow the business so one day it will be  full time and I can be doing flowers all the time.
Personaly we are planning on renovating our house soon, and just helping our kids grow up and have lots of fun doing it.

• What is your role in the business and why are you passionate about it?

I have been working in the bridal industry for 7 years, I completed my diploma in beauty therapy and loved makeup so much I went to Sydney and did the Napoleon Perdis Academy course. Makeup was my main Bridal service for many years and in the last few years have branched out using my other skills as a beauty therapist, and loving it. I love helping brides to get prefect skin before their wedding with Pelactiv peels and skin care, and to finish them off with stunning Napoleon Perdis makeup on the day. I have become friends with many of my brides over the years and have met some great people and will continue to do so in the future.
• What are some of your past business experiences?

My work experience has involved hundreds of brides and their bridal parties, I have worked on television ads such as the Horizon Credit Union, Brother Stationery, I worked on the Channel 10 comedy show “The Ronnie Johns Half Hour” this was particularly fun working with comedians and doing fun makeup like bears and Indians with the use of wigs and facial hair etc. I have also worked a number of times on Natalie Bassingwaithe, when she was a bridesmaid for her sister, and she has lead me to other work from her recommendations, she is great to work with, full of energy and an inspiration!
• Tell us a bit about your family and home life…

My home life is pretty relaxed, it has to be working in such a fast paced environment at work. My partner and I enjoy outdoor activities together so in summer we get out on the jet ski, sometimes we headsdown the south coast for the day with friends or for a weekend away. We also love snowboarding, I make sure we have at least one trip to the snow each winter. The other love in my life is my choc lab, we love long walks along the beach in the sunshine.
• What are your plans for the future?

Plans for the business, I already have a great name within Wollongong are planning to become more well known in the Wollongong area. I am also a qualified Beauty Therapy and Makeup Teacher, I currently teach in my spare time and would love to run more Makeup Workshops to get the public educated on how apply their own makeup quickly, easily and look like you have just stepped out of the salon!
