Hayden and Ashleigh first met through Ashleigh’s sister. However, it was some years before their paths crossed again. Ashleigh, who was by then living in Sydney, had planned a weekend away in Newcastle with some girlfriends. Knowing that Hayden lived there, she decided to contact him to see if he would like to catch up sometime over the weekend. Long story short, they did catch up … on what turned out to be a permanent basis.
In October 2010, unbeknownst to Ashleigh, Hayden drove from Newcastle to Ashleigh’s family home in Kiama to ask her father for permission to propose. Not one for keeping secrets, he took her to an ocean lookout the very next day on the pretext of photographing whales. As she took photos of the beautiful scenery, Ashleigh turned to find Hayden on bended knee holding out a stunning diamond ring.
With a shared love of the ocean and surfing as their style inspiration, the couple chose a vintage beach theme, and selected a fresh colour palette that included white, navy blue, grey and yellow hues. At the reception, they named their tables after their favourite beaches, and Hayden’s brother fashioned wooden table names and a seating plan, carved into the shape of surfboards.
The bride’s dream gown was a strapless Melanie Ford creation with a sweet heart white corded lace bodice flaring out into a full soft tulle skirt. Ashleigh wore a gorgeous veil, fascinator and handmade pearl necklace, all sourced from Etsy, and completed her wedding day style with jewelled Manolo Blahniks!
The bridesmaids looked elegant in navy blue convertible dresses by Henkaa. The boys’ charcoal tailored suites, worn with pale blue button up shirts and black skinny ties, perfectly complemented the bridesmaids’ dresses.
After 17 months of careful planning, the couple’s wedding day was everything that they had hoped for. Following a fairy tale ceremony at Gerringong’s romantic St Mary’s Star of the Sea church, the bridal party had a wonderful time at a fun beach side photo shoot.
Later, they re-joined family and friends in a delightfully decorated reception room for a night to remember. A photo booth kept guests endlessly entertained. Each guest was given a copy of their photo to keep, while another copy was placed in an album with all the other guest photos, along with written congratulatory messages – a wonderful keepsake for the bride and groom.
For their favours, the couple chose gift-boxed shot glasses engraved with their names and wedding date. And, not surprisingly, the couple opted for a surfing destination honeymoon in Samoa and on Fiji’s Coral Coast.

Illawarra-based photographer Ela Photography had the pleasure of shooting the beautiful wedding of Jake and Ashlee. After an uncertain prediction of rainy weather, Ashlee was worried she might need a boat to get around on her wedding day! But alas, the weather cleared and it turned out to be a great day.
Ashlee and Jake were married at the church of St Francis of Assisi, and their stunning reception was at Portofino.
